Modular EPD tool
Granlund’s Modular EPD tool reliably produces specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for products and product ranges automatically from the customer’s systems.
What is the Modular EPD tool needed for?
Drawing up EPDs is challenging and requires expertise. Product manufacturers with extensive product ranges often find drawing up EPDs hard work.
Product manufacturers can easily have thousands of products in their portfolio, comprising recurring components. What is more, many manufacturers tailor their products, for instance, to the needs of a specific customer’s construction site – which then requires a new EPD.
As a rule of thumb, producing an EPD for each product in the range is extremely challenging.
When it comes to producing EPD reports, it is essential to provide product manufacturers with efficient methods with which to produce EPD data.
Granlund’s Modular EPD tool streamlines the production and presentation of EPD data for product groups and different product variations.
Amongst other things, Granlund’s Modular EPD tool has produced EPD data for lighting, ventilation products, modular prefabricated products and windows.
The environmental performance of a product provides an indisputable competitive edge
Different construction products can have vastly different carbon footprints, even if the products were otherwise similar. As choices are increasingly made on the basis of environmental impacts, environmental friendliness provides an indisputable competitive edge for all product and equipment manufacturers.
Due to the emission reduction targets of construction projects, reporting the emissions of products used in construction keeps product manufacturers increasingly busy.
In order to actually achieve the targeted – i.e. lowest possible – environmental impact, the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) drawn up for products must be as truthful, accurate and product-specific as possible.
As product EPDs are subject to increasing scrutiny, they must be reliable and free of errors. That said, the current key issues are related to the quality, reliability of data and accuracy of EPDs.
Often, the declarations represent the average of the product group, which means that the results of a well-implemented EPD only accurately represent some of the products it represents.
Increasingly, choices are made on the basis of environmental effects.
Product manufacturers do not have to become environmental experts – it is enough to know your own products
The Modular EPD tool can be linked to the product manufacturer’s own ERP systems, enabling manufacturers to automatically and effortlessly create accurate EPDs for all products in the product range as well as each individual order.
Granlund’s LCA and EPD experts have extensive experience in ensuring the quality of calculations. We help our customers determine the way to build EPDs for product ranges, for example.
The Modular EPD tool increases the efficiency of calculation
Granlund’s Modular EPD tool is a calculation engine that contains ready-modelled and verified life cycle assessment results.
Our solution materially reduces the need for verification, getting rid of product-specific accounting maintenance and verifications as well as the merry-go-round of data publishing.
The Modular EPD tool renders the production of EPDs faster and more cost-effective than having to implement and publish a separate EPD for each product. As it is based on exact product-specific or configuration-specific data rather than averages, it also produces more reliable data.
Amongst other things, Granlund’s Modular EPD tool has successfully – i.e. as hassle-free as possible for the customer – produced EPD data for lighting, ventilation products, modular prefabricated products and windows.
A component-based solution developed together with Rakennustieto
The quality data of the Modular EPD tool is based on the Component EPD developed in collaboration with Rakennustieto. Component EPD is a solution that creates ready-made EPD-level* technical data for identical components in a product. (* Technical data presented in accordance with EN 15804.)
Component EPDs are suitable for life-cycle calculation just like other third-party verified and published EPDs, but they are significantly cheaper and faster to produce and publish than an EPD created for the product from the start.
Our solution materially reduces the need for verification, getting rid of product-specific accounting maintenance and verifications as well as the merry-go-round of data publishing.
What EPD?
- The official Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for a construction product
- Complies with the EN 15804 standard
- Valid for 5 years; updated if the technical data changes by more than 10%
- Includes the construction product’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Focused on the carbon footprint and lifecycle calculation of the entire supply chain and product lifecycle
- Takes into account emissions from material procurement and energy consumption (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3)
- An unbiased and independent third-party verified document.
- In Finland, EPDs are published, e.g. by Rakennustieto Oy (RTS EPD).
What are the benefits of an EPD?
- Provides product-specific emission information for the carbon footprint and life cycle assessments of buildings
- Replaces generic emission databases with manufacturer-specific data
- Enables emission comparisons of construction products
- Competitive advantage with sustainability-conscious customers
- Helps convey the product’s reduced emission in a credible way
- Gives developers additional points in environmental certifications, such as LEED and BREEAM
- Helps identify the emission and cost effects of your own processes
- Helps increase production efficiency, resulting in emission and cost savings.

Climecon’s ventilation solutions’ product-specific carbon emissions with EPD reports
Climecon was one of the first MEP operators to commission Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) reports for its most popular ventilation solutions. The aim is to be transparent about the carbon emissions of products and, thus, provide added value to customers.
An EPD provides a competitive edge for MEP equipment manufacturers
MEP can have a significant effect on a building’s energy efficiency. A construction product’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides an opportunity to develop low-carbon production and products.
