What is the Modular EPD service needed for?
Drawing up EPDs is challenging and requires expertise. Product manufacturers with extensive product ranges often find drawing up EPDs hard work.
Product manufacturers can easily have thousands of products in their portfolio, comprising recurring components. What is more, many manufacturers tailor their products, for instance, to the needs of a specific customer’s construction site – which then requires a new EPD.
As a rule of thumb, producing an EPD for each product in the range is extremely challenging.
When it comes to producing EPD reports, it is essential to provide product manufacturers with efficient methods with which to produce EPD data.

Different construction products can have vastly different carbon footprints, even if the products were otherwise similar. As choices are increasingly made on the basis of environmental impacts, environmental friendliness provides an indisputable competitive edge for all product and equipment manufacturers.
Due to the emission reduction targets of construction projects, reporting the emissions of products used in construction keeps product manufacturers increasingly busy.
In order to actually achieve the targeted – i.e. lowest possible – environmental impact, the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) drawn up for products must be as truthful, accurate and product-specific as possible.
As product EPDs are subject to increasing scrutiny, they must be reliable and free of errors. That said, the current key issues are related to the quality, reliability of data and accuracy of EPDs.
Often, the declarations represent the average of the product group, which means that the results of a well-implemented EPD only accurately represent some of the products it represents.
Increasingly, choices are made on the basis of environmental effects.

The Modular EPD service increases the efficiency of calculation
The Component EPD developed by Granlund together with Rakennustieto is a solution in which ready-made EPD-level data is created for the parts that are repeated in the same way in the product, which are verified and published EPDs for individual products are produced by combining this out-of-the-box data according to the calculation model defined in the component EPD.
This makes the production and publication of product variants much more efficient, reliable and faster than an EPD made from scratch. EPDs of individual product variants produced on the basis of component EPDs are suitable for life cycle calculations, as are other EPDs verified and published by a third party.
A component EPD and the EPDs of individual product variants produced on the basis of it are suitable for life cycle calculation in the same way as other EPDs verified and published by a third party, but the production and publication of variants is significantly cheaper and faster than an EPD made for the product from scratch.
Our solution significantly eliminates verification work and allows us to say goodbye to product-specific accounting maintenance, product-specific verifications and the hassle of publishing information.
The Component EPD and the Modular EPD tool make the production of EPDs more cost-effective and faster than creating and publishing a separate EPD for each product. The information it produces is also more reliable, as it is based on precise product- or configuration-specific information, not averages.
Our solution materially reduces the need for verification, getting rid of product-specific accounting maintenance and verifications as well as the merry-go-round of data publishing.
