The electrical design of West Terminal 2 focused on the user and travel experiences. 3D modelling was used to support the electrical, AV and sound reproduction design.
Close cooperation between designers
A total of 140 companies were involved in constructing the terminal and its infrastructure, which is why smooth procedures, effective organisation and occupational safety on the construction site became hugely important. The terminal was commissioned in phases, and the project was completed two months ahead of schedule.
“The new terminal is extremely important for the entire Finnish marine traffic, which motivated everyone to do their best,” says Tero Nieminen, Project Manager in Electrical Design at Granlund. “Thanks to close cooperation between the client, construction site and designers, we could focus on finding the optimal solutions and move ahead of schedule.”
Lighting design can promote smooth passenger flow inside the terminal.
The indoor lighting project of the year in 2017
West Terminal 2 in Jätkäsaari serves as the port for the fast regular services between Helsinki and Tallinn. Lighting design was an important part of the MEP design because lighting can be used for controlling the smooth flow of passengers inside the terminal. The lighting designers used solutions such as simple linear luminaires.
The Finnish electrical design association NSS ry selected West Terminal 2 as the indoor lighting project of the year in 2017. The jury described West Terminal 2 as an exemplary combination of architecture, functionality and lighting. Furthermore, the large windows enable daylight harvesting with the help of daylight sensors.
