KYS Uusi Sydän: The alliance model proves its worth in a EUR 200 million hospital project
12.12.2023 – A decision was made to implement the largest hospital project in Kuopio Finland, Uusi Sydän, using the alliance model. The decision was successful as the project has progressed on schedule and under budget.
Investing in design pays off
In the KYS Uusi Sydän alliance, design takes place parallel with construction. Before they are implemented, the design solutions are always discussed together with the constructor and client.
“On one hand, the operating model creates more design work and the schedules are often tight. On the other hand, the overall results are better,” says Jukka Kolehmainen, Department Head, Granlund Kuopio.
Smooth cooperation is based on good chemistry and mutual trust.
Juho Mustonen, Area Manager, Caverion
Caverion Finland and Are Oy are responsible for the implementation of MEP. Juho Mustonen, Area Manager, Caverion, is full of praise for the exceptional cooperation in the project, at site offices as well as Big Room.
“Smooth cooperation is based on good chemistry and mutual trust. Granlund’s solid design expertise and Caverion’s contracting know-how complement each other perfectly. This has enabled us to identify the best and most cost-effective MEP solutions for the project,” says Mustonen.
The site won the nationwide “Vuoden työmaa” (Site of the Year) competition and won awards at regional East Finland occupational safety competitions.
Successful project receives praise
According to Marko Sutinen, Group Manager, Granlund Kuopio, the modern hospital is full of MEP that is vital for the hospital’s operations as well as patient safety. The electrical supply of ventilation, drains and life support equipment must work in all conditions.
“When it comes to MEP design, we also pay a lot of attention to energy consumption during the property’s entire life cycle. Hospital equipment consumes a lot of electricity. Energy is also consumed by a large number of people on the premises,” says Sutinen.
Investments in energy efficiency include heat recovery and other energy recycling solutions This makes it possible to reduce the consumption of heating energy by dozens of percentage points compared to a conventional hospital property.
The successful completion of the KYS Uusi Sydän cardiac clinic project has not gone unnoticed in the construction sector. The site won the nationwide “Vuoden työmaa” (Site of the Year) competition and won awards at regional East Finland occupational safety competitions.
“The merit of the performance is further enhanced by the fact that the construction stage was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in construction costs,” says Tommi Miettinen.
